Mellado De La CruzVeronica Mellado De La Cruz- Southern Methodist University

After Veronica Mellado De La Cruz earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from Southern Methodist University, she sought the opportunity to serve an at risk population as a part of a multidisciplinary team.  A position as a certified Early Intervention Specialist serving the 0-3 population under Part C of IDEA/IDEIA matched her interests well.  Veronica conducted formal and informal assessments and delivered Developmental Services through Early Childhood Intervention (ECI).  She worked alongside occupational, physical, and speech therapists, psychologists, and counselors in service of exceptional young clients and their families.  She especially enjoyed the opportunity to serve an economically, culturally, and linguistically diverse population, addressing unique medical, social, developmental, and educational needs through a commitment to individualized assessment, planning, and intervention.  Veronica also translated to and from Spanish during team meetings, linked children and families to appropriate community services and organizations, and supported the transition to private services, or school-based Special Education or Bilingual Education.  With first-hand knowledge of the benefits as well as the challenges of home-based services, Veronica came to view school-based services as a key entry point for early intervention and access to diverse populations.  After a year of Masters level coursework and providing research support as an interventionist to small groups of struggling readers, Veronica broadened her knowledge and experience of practices and principles to the K-12 setting.
Veronica looks forward to beginning her Ph.D. in Education at Simmons School of Education and Human Development, Southern Methodist University, in fall 2015.  A native of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and long-time Texan, Veronica values family time both locally in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and in her hometown whenever possible.  She enjoys sharing in the company of her daughter and husband while playing cards or sports, trying new recipes from time to time, and dabbles in basic home projects.
